Solo Exhibition at Oakland Public Library Lakeview Branch, September 30 - October 27th, 2023

I am presenting two series of large prints at the Oakland Public Library Lakeview Branch in October: “Place Non Place” and “Shadows of Healing and Pain.” A shelf of books that have inspired my art practice will also be available to browse at the library and online here: Place Non Place shelf at OPL.

“Place Non Place” is a panorama composed of 16x20-inch gelatin silver prints made in the summer of 2023 from negatives I developed in the five years since moving back to the Bay Area from New York in 2018. Each print is exposed on fiber-based paper and developed using individually brewed plant-based chemistry. While each print is a unique work from a specific “place,” together they form one imagined “non place” linked by horizon lines and landscape features. The series takes inspiration in part from the concepts of simultaneity and connectedness, in the visual sense as well as the metaphysical and chemical. For the occasion, I have also published a limited edition zine with Oakland-based risgraph press, Chute Studio, featuring the full panorama.

“Shadows of Healing and Pain” is an ongoing series featuring shadows projected onto architecture and landscapes. I developed both the film and prints using medicinal plants chosen for their healing properties. Shadows address the invisibility of the plants used to make the developers and speak tothe intangible qualities of pain we all experience as humans. The ingredients used to make these images heal, as, it is hoped, the images themselves do as well.

The exhibition will be up through October 27th, 2023.
